Healthy Soil

Healthy soil is the foundation, the backbone, of a successful garden. So many times we are frustrated with our existing soil; it doesn’t drain well in a clay rich area, or it drains too well in sandy soil. We don’t know what to do! You don’t add gravel, sand or peat moss to break up heavy soil and you don’t add plain topsoil to sandy soil. You add chopped leaves, grass clippings, manure (horse, cow or chicken) or finished compost to these tough areas. Compost, especially, will add beneficial worms, bacteria, fungi and other microbiotic material. With time this will add valuable nutrients, retain moisture effectively and create proper drainage. Make your soil happy and health – add compost!
